About
Nomadic Ceramics exists because I, your fearless (read: very fearful) potter, couldn't handle the bureaucracy of the non-profits world. Well that, and because my sensory needs are very specific - specific enough that sitting alone playing with mud all day is the only way for me to be a human. After a year spent living and working (and having an existential career crisis) in Amman and Istanbul I was fascinated (*hyper-fixated*) with the intricate pieces of pottery that filled everyones homes. The process of throwing, and the tradition surrounding the finished pieces was so captivating that I decided to take a class in throwing, in order to fully appreciate the craft and tradition.
That was six years ago now. That one class turned into an additional degree, and later, my #GirlBossJobby. I'm sorry, that's a horrible joke but I hate writing these so I've got to amuse myself somehow. Its my job, my love, and only occasionally - while testing new glaze formulas - the bane of my existence.
My style tends to change based on the seasons and where I am, but the ties to beauty in everyday utility remain. Currently, Nomadic Ceramics is made in Bend, Oregon. For how long? Only the rental market and gas prices know.
I'm not sure what else you're supposed to write on these pages so here's some stuff you might want to know:
- Everything is handmade, and fired to cone 6, in my garage (its great commute...please don't laugh it only encourages me)
- That strange cut up cardboard stuff your pottery was shipped in? Its from the glorious hms profipak - a terrifyingly strong machine that turns my clay boxes into packing material, because *yay* recycling
-All of my work is non-toxic and food safe
-yes, really
- that gold is real 24k gold
-yes, really really
- around 5% of profits are donated to non profits each month. I say "around" because, you know, bills...
-it seems to bother some people that those donations are going to groups supporting abortion and bipoc rights. Hobby Lobby has mugs if that's the case for you.
-I'm autistic. That might not seem like pottery pertinent information but it is actually (I won't make you read why) and I like people to know - mostly because a ton of people don't know that they know an autistic person (we're sneaky aka masking) and I want more people to know. Ya know? Someone stop me.
Okay, I've obviously devolved into a very strange list of things for an "about" page so I think its time for me to go. If you're still with me, thanks for reading and wow, you've got killer focus.
